Interlock devices (also known as ignition interlock devices) are an option for the court when they are dealing with an unusually high DUI blood alcohol content, or in the case of multiple DUI offenses (within a ten year period). An interlock device prevents someone who is has alcohol in their system from starting a motor vehicle. You blow into a tube, and the device will prevent your vehicle from starting unless you are alcohol free. The Court or DMV can order interlock devices installed on your car as part of your DUI sentence or as a condition of getting or reinstating a drivers license.
